Ukraine Launches Third Attack on Crimea Bridge: Major Damage Reported
Ukraine's Security Service claims successful strike on strategic Kerch Strait Bridge, targeting Russian supply routes.
On June 3, 2025, Ukraine reported that it had successfully struck the strategically important Kerch Strait Bridge for the third time, a critical link between the Crimean peninsula and the Russian mainland. This latest operation was carried out by the Security Service of Ukraine (S.B.U), which stated that ground preparations for the attack involved months of meticulous planning, including planting explosives on the bridge's underwater support structures.
“The first explosive device was detonated at 4:44 a.m., leading to severe damage to the underwater support pillars,” the S.B.U. noted, specifying that the operation utilized explosives equivalent to 1,100 kg of TNT. Fortunately, no civilian casualties have been reported in this latest strike. The exact extent of the damage is still being assessed; however, the bridge is currently deemed to be in an emergency condition.
The news followed closely on the heels of one of Ukraine's boldest operations since the onset of the conflict, where military forces struck deep into Russian territory, targeting critical assets such as the Russian strategic bombing fleet. Reports from RIA Novosti, a Russian state media organization, confirmed that the bridge was temporarily closed for several hours due to the explosion, although traffic resumed later in the day with no significant public disruption.
The Kerch Strait Bridge holds immense tactical importance as it serves as a major supply route for the Russian military operating in southern Ukraine. The bridge's significance is further accentuated by its symbolic value to President Vladimir V. Putin, who presided over its inauguration in 2018.
This attack marks a notable continuation of Ukraine's efforts to disrupt Russian logistics, following a previous truck bomb explosion in October 2022 that produced significant damage and required extensive repairs. In subsequent months, Ukrainian forces have also targeted the bridge with maritime drones in an effort to dismantle its operational capacity. Despite ongoing repairs and an increased defensive posture from Russian forces, Ukraine remains resolute in its mission to reclaim control and protect its sovereignty in the contested region.
