Macron's Controversial Remarks Ignite Outrage in Africa
French President's comments on gratitude spark backlash from Chad and Senegal
French President Emmanuel Macron has sparked a fierce reaction from African leaders following his recent comments suggesting that Sahel nations should express gratitude for France's military interventions in the region. During a speech at an annual ambassadors' conference in Paris, Macron stated that no Sahelian country would possess sovereignty if not for French troops, who were deployed to combat jihadist threats.
In response, Chad's Foreign Minister Abderaman Koulamallah strongly condemned the remarks, stating they reflect a "contemptuous attitude towards Africa." He stressed the importance of French leaders respecting African nations and recognizing their sacrifices over decades. He lamented that such comments overlook the complex relationship and contributions of African nations.
Moreover, Senegal's Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko echoed similar sentiments, highlighting that France's historical actions, notably its role in the destabilization of Libya, have led to detrimental consequences for regional security. He asserted that it is now time for African nations to take charge of their own security and sovereignty without French influence.
Macron's comments come amidst the ongoing withdrawal of French troops from West Africa, where France has been involved since 2013, following a call to arms against Islamist militants. The French president dismissed notions of being forced out, insisting it was a "reorganization" of interests in the strategic region, even as several West African nations have tightened their ties with Russia, moving away from France.
Chad’s foreign minister also pointed out that recent changes in defense agreements reflect a broader trend of nations like Chad, Senegal, and Ivory Coast seeking to redefine their security partnerships according to national priorities rather than French interests. The response from African leaders marks a significant turning point in France's historical relations with its former colonies, reiterating the need for mutual respect and recognition in foreign exchanges.
