Dolly Parton Mourns the Loss of Her Beloved Husband, Carl Dean
Country music legend Dolly Parton shares heartfelt tributes following the passing of her longtime husband, Carl Dean, who died at age 82.
Dolly Parton is reeling from the loss of her husband, Carl Dean, who passed away at the age of 82 on Monday in Nashville, Tennessee. Parton shared a touching message on social media, reflecting on their more than 60 years of marriage. "Carl and I spent many wonderful years together. Words can't do justice to the love we shared for over 60 years. Thank you for your prayers and sympathy," her statement read.
The couple’s love story began when they met outside a laundromat shortly after Parton moved to Nashville as an aspiring singer at just 18 years old. She fondly recounted their first encounter, noting, "I was surprised and delighted that while he talked to me, he looked at my face (a rare thing for me). He seemed to be genuinely interested in finding out who I was and what I was about."
Parton and Dean got married on May 30, 1966, in a private ceremony in Ringgold, Georgia. Despite being married to one of country music's biggest stars, Dean chose to lead a life out of the spotlight, focusing on his asphalt-paving business instead. However, he remained a profound influence in Parton’s life and music, inspiring her timeless hit "Jolene."
In a 2008 interview, Parton explained how the song was inspired by a bank teller who had fallen for Dean, noting with humor the playful banter they shared about Dean's visits to the bank. "He just loved going to the bank because she paid him so much attention," Parton shared, adding that "it sounds like a dreadful one" when it’s really an innocent tale.
Throughout their marriage, Dean's elusive nature led to speculation regarding his existence, prompting Parton to joke in 1984, "A lot of people say there's no Carl Dean, that he's just somebody I made up to keep other people off me." Together, they had no children.
Dean is survived by his siblings, Sandra and Donnie, as highlighted in Parton's heartfelt statement.
