WHO Demands Halt to Attacks on Hospitals Amid Gaza Crisis

The World Health Organization's Chief calls for an immediate cessation of violence targeting healthcare facilities in Gaza, as hospitals face dire threats.

Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus of the WHO has issued a grave warning regarding the current state of healthcare in Gaza amidst ongoing military operations. This statement follows the forcible evacuation of the last functioning hospital in northern Gaza and the bombardment of key medical facilities.

In the wake of escalating violence in Gaza, the World Health Organization has urged for a stop to attacks on hospitals, emphasizing their critical role as safe havens for the wounded. Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus condemned recent military actions aimed at medical facilities, highlighting the severe implications for healthcare in the region.

The latest shocking event involved the Kamal Adwan hospital, which was stormed and emptied by Israeli forces on Friday, while two additional hospitals in Gaza City endured artillery strikes on Sunday. The Israeli military claimed these locations were being used as Hamas operational centers, yet evidence provided remains unverified.

Dr. Tedros joined various human rights advocates in calling for the liberation of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, the detained director of Kamal Adwan, labeling his imprisonment as a potential violation of international laws protecting medical staff in conflict zones. Concerns regarding Dr. Abu Safiya’s health have been raised as he recuperates from substantial injuries sustained in previous assaults.

In response to the deteriorating conditions for healthcare access, WHO and partner organizations delivered essential supplies to the Indonesian hospital, which is currently inoperative, and salvaged critically ill patients from Kamal Adwan. Notably, the transfer was intercepted, resulting in the detention of four patients.

The ongoing Israeli military offensive has been severely hindering humanitarian efforts in the region, claiming numerous innocent lives amidst fighting purportedly directed at eradicating Hamas influence. Witness reports from the al-Wafa hospital revealed distressing accounts of injury and chaos ensuing from attacks, further emphasizing the precarious situation of both patients and healthcare providers.

As the violence continues, civilians are left grappling with loss and uncertainty. Displaced individuals express fears about imminent raids and the absence of safe spaces, underscoring the magnitude of this humanitarian crisis. Since October, the humanitarian toll has risen alarmingly, with over 45,540 reported deaths in Gaza amid the unrest ignited by the horrific attacks on southern Israel in early October.

The broader implications of this conflict demand immediate global attention and action to restore safety and healthcare access for vulnerable populations caught in the crossfire.
