Pope Urges Protection of Human Dignity Amid AI Advancements
Celebrating the first Mass for Catholic influencers, Pope Leo XIV emphasizes the necessity of safeguarding human dignity against the challenges posed by artificial intelligence.
In a significant address during the Vatican's Jubilee of Youth, Pope Leo XIV highlighted the pressing need to safeguard human dignity as technological advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) continue to evolve. Speaking to Catholic social media influencers at St. Peter's Basilica, the Pope remarked, "Nothing that comes from man and his creativity should be used to undermine the dignity of others." He stressed that AI and similar technologies should serve the "benefit of all humanity."
This week's gathering, a celebration held every 25 years, has drawn attention as the Pope reaffirms his stance on AI. He noted the responsibility to maintain our capacity for meaningful communication in this "new era," underscoring the importance of developing a shared language that embodies love and compassion.
Addressing the influencers directly, the Pope encouraged them to connect with those who are marginalized and in need, stating they should be "agents of communion," working against societal divisions characterized by individualism and egocentrism.
Earlier in May, during his first Sunday address as Pope, Leo XIV advocated for the Church's role in defending human dignity amid the rapid pace of technological progress. As the first pontiff from the United States, his leadership has emphasized engagement with diverse communities, reflecting a deep-seated commitment to justice and unity.
