Gunfire Erupts Near Brussels Metro Station; Manhunt Underway
Authorities launch a manhunt after masked gunmen fire rifles outside a metro station, though no injuries have been reported.
A tense situation unfolded in Brussels early Wednesday morning when two masked individuals fired rifles outside the Clemenceau metro station in the Anderlecht district. Thankfully, authorities reported no injuries resulting from the incident, which has led to an ongoing manhunt by local police. Security footage captured the two assailants moving along the sidewalk with rifles that resembled Kalashnikovs, shooting bullets carelessly while avoiding nearby pedestrians. They subsequently fled into the metro station.
Willemien Baert, spokesperson for the public prosecutor’s office, indicated that the shooting did not appear to be linked to terrorism. Investigators have since retrieved several bullet casings from the scene, signaling the severity of the incident.
To facilitate the investigation, both the Clemenceau and Gare du Midi metro stations were temporarily closed for about four hours, prompting disruptions in public transit operations as law enforcement officials searched for clues. The motives behind this alarming act remain unclear, and police continue to gather evidence to ensure public safety in the capital.
