Trump Ends Temporary Legal Status for Over Half a Million Migrants from Latin America and the Caribbean

Impending legal status revocation accelerates concerns among migrants previously protected under the Biden administration.

The Trump administration’s decision to rescind the temporary legal status for over 530,000 migrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela has raised alarm as many are urged to leave the US by April 24.

In a significant policy shift, the Trump administration announced that it will revoke the temporary legal status of more than 530,000 migrants predominantly from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela. This announcement follows a notice shared by federal authorities, presenting a deadline of April 24 for those affected to depart the United States before their work permits and protection against deportation are terminated.

This group of 530,000 migrants had initially been granted entry to the US under a policy implemented during the Biden administration, known as the CHNV program. This program aimed to facilitate legal migration channels, allowing individuals and their immediate family members to enter the US with American sponsors for a duration of two years under a temporary immigration status referred to as parole.

President Biden’s administration had promoted CHNV as a measure to deter illegal border crossings. However, the Department of Homeland Security recently accused the previous administration of misrepresenting facts to the American public regarding this initiative. They asserted that the Biden administration contributed to allowing migrants to compete for American jobs, and claimed they had forced civil servants into promoting a program that had been identified with fraudulent activities.

Despite the sweeping cancellation of statuses, the 35-page notice outlined in the Federal Register indicates that some individuals may be granted the opportunity to remain in the country "on a case-by-case basis." Adding more urgency to the situation, Trump is also deliberating over the potential revocation of temporary legal status for approximately 240,000 Ukrainians who sought refuge in the US due to the ongoing conflict with Russia.

As the deadline looms, many migrants find themselves in a precarious position, navigating the uncertainty of their legal status and future in the United States.
