Young Survivor of Gaza Airstrike Heads to Italy for Urgent Medical Care
Adam al-Najjar, the sole survivor of an Israeli strike that claimed his family's lives, receives treatment in Italy after tragic loss.
An 11-year-old boy from Gaza, Adam al-Najjar, is leaving for Italy to receive critical medical care following a devastating airstrike that resulted in the deaths of his father and nine siblings. The tragedy struck the family’s home in Khan Younis on May 23, with Adam suffering severe injuries while being the only survivor.
The evacuation, organized by the Italian foreign ministry, is scheduled for Wednesday evening as Adam and his mother, Dr. Alaa al-Najjar, prepare to fly to Milan. Alaa revealed in a recent interview that while Adam’s condition is stable, his left arm has suffered significant injuries, including fractured bones and damaged nerves.
The plan includes Adam and his mother crossing into the Israeli city of Eilat alongside 17 other injured Palestinians and their relatives, before taking chartered flights to various locations in Italy. So far, about 150 Palestinian patients and over 450 family members have been airlifted for medical treatment since the escalation of conflict in the region.
Adam's father, Dr. Hamdi al-Najjar, tragically passed away due to injuries sustained during the strike, just after dropping Alaa off at Nasser Hospital, where both parents worked. According to medical reports, when Adam was brought to the hospital, he had severe lacerations and multiple fragment injuries.
In response to the airstrike, the Israeli Defense Forces indicated that they were reviewing the situation, asserting that the attack targeted individuals suspected of combat activities. The ongoing violence has left over 54,981 people dead in Gaza, as reported by the local health ministry. This incident has further highlighted the human cost and tragedies arising from the Israel-Gaza conflict.
