Wildfires Rage Near Jerusalem, Authorities Urge Swift Action
Firefighters combat persistent wildfires around Jerusalem as winds threaten to escalate the situation further.
Firefighters in Israel faced challenging conditions as they fought to contain raging wildfires on the outskirts of Jerusalem, entering their second consecutive day of intense efforts. The blazes, deemed some of the worst in the region in recent years, prompted officials to temporarily close the main highway connecting Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. However, as firefighters made progress, they were allowed to reopen the road, enabling evacuees in both Israel and the Israeli-occupied West Bank to return home.
Fire service spokeswoman Tal Volvovitch highlighted the urgency of extinguishing the fires before predicted wind gusts could further exacerbate the situation. "We’re doing everything we can to finish in the coming hours because the wind gusts can bring us back to where we started," she stated.
The origins of the wildfires remain under investigation, but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the detention of 18 individuals suspected of arson. Among those, one was apprehended while allegedly igniting the flames. Netanyahu indicated that severe winds, continued dry conditions, and expansive areas of shrubbery contributed to the ferocity of the fires. In a separate incident, Israeli police arrested a 19-year-old male from an East Jerusalem neighborhood for expressing support for the wildfires on social media.
To bolster firefighting efforts, aircraft from Croatia, Italy, and Cyprus were expected to join the struggle later in the day. The Palestinian Authority also offered assistance, as expressed by senior official Hussein al-Sheikh; however, Volvovitch suggested their participation might not materialize. Notably, during a similar wildfire event in 2021, Palestinian firefighters collaborated with their Israeli counterparts to combat the blazes near Jerusalem.
In light of the situation, Israel’s fire and rescue service issued a temporary ban on lighting fires in open areas until May 7, though it affirmed that citizens are permitted to hold barbecues in designated locations. Typically, many Israelis celebrate Independence Day by gathering for barbecues in parks and on beaches, traditions that have seen disruption this year due to the ongoing wildfire crisis.
