Submarine Tragedy in Red Sea Claims Six Lives: Investigation Underway

On Thursday, a tragic incident unfolded in the Red Sea when a tourist submarine sank, resulting in the death of six out of 45 passengers on board. The mishap occurred around 10:00 local time while viewers were exploring coral reefs off the Hurghada coast. Prompt rescue efforts managed to save 39 passengers and five crew members, although nine individuals suffered injuries, four of whom are reported to be critically injured.

Among the deceased, all reportedly Russian nationals, were two married doctors, leaving their children recuperating in the hospital. Local officials have confirmed the submarine was licensed, and its crew leader held the appropriate scientific credentials. Preliminary reports suggest the vessel may have struck a reef, causing it to lose pressure at a depth of approximately 20 meters.

The Red Sea governor, Amr Hanafy, reported that the group consisted of tourists from Russia, India, Norway, and Sweden, while the submarine had been a popular choice for exploration for several years. This saddening event marks a troubling trend, as it is the second such incident in the Red Sea within just six months, raising serious concerns over safety protocols and inspections in the region's tourism sector.
