Knife Attack at Haifa Train Station Leaves One Dead, Several Injured

An elderly man has lost his life and four others sustained injuries in what authorities are labelling a terrorist knife attack in Haifa, a city in northern Israel. The violent episode occurred at the HaMifratz Central train and bus station, where the assailant was subsequently killed by security guards at the scene.

The deceased victim was reported to be around 70 years old according to the Magen David Adom ambulance service. Other victims include a 15-year-old boy, a man, and a woman in their 30s who are all in serious condition, while a 70-year-old woman is reported to be moderately injured.

Investigators revealed that the attacker was an Israeli Druze man from the town of Shfaram, a community whose members historically exhibit loyalty to the state of Israel. His actions are considered atypical for the Druze, an ethnic and religious group that represents approximately 1.5% of Israel's population.

Eyewitness accounts reveal that the assailant arrived in Haifa via bus from Shfaram and initiated his attacks on unsuspecting passengers upon arrival. One witness recounted the chaos as the man continued his assault on others within the station concourse.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed condolences, condemning the attack as "shocking" and reaffirmed his commitment to combating terrorism. While no armed groups have claimed responsibility for the stabbing, Hamas referred to the attack as "heroic," framing it as a reaction to perceived Israeli injustices against Palestinians.

This incident occurs amid a stalemate in negotiations between Israel and Hamas regarding a ceasefire in Gaza. Recently, aid access to Gaza was suspended after Hamas rejected a proposed extension of the original ceasefire deal, escalating tensions as both sides navigate the complex political landscape.
