Revamping Wikipedia's Celebrity Images: A Volunteer Photographers' Initiative
Amateur photographers rally to enhance the quality of celebrity photos on Wikipedia.
As one of the most frequented websites globally, Wikipedia faces a significant challenge regarding the quality of its images, particularly those of renowned figures. Many of these images are outdated or unflattering, prompting the establishment of WikiPortraits, a new initiative focused on enlisting amateur photographers to revitalize these visuals. This project has garnered attention for addressing a long-standing issue acknowledged by both editors and users alike.
WikiPortraits originated with the goal of empowering volunteer photographers by granting them access to events like film premieres and festivals, where they can capture fresh images of public figures. This effort is led by Kevin Payravi and Jennifer Lee, who are enthusiastic about improving Wikipedia’s image database. "Wikipedia has long struggled with poor-quality photos of notable personalities," Payravi stated from the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas.
The project began in early 2024 and has attracted photographers motivated by their passion for Wikipedia. Although not financially compensated, most photographers involved are either hobbyists or professionals seeking to expand their portfolios. Thus far, 55 photographers have participated, with work already completed or planned for Wikipedia entries.
One participant, Bryan Berlin, balances his roles as a photographer and high school teacher in New York. Having participated in renowned events like the Sundance Film Festival, Berlin relishes the opportunity to improve Wikipedia's content. "Better photos provide more accurate information to users," he explained.
While the initiative benefits Wikipedia’s image representation, it also provides personal growth for the photographers involved. Berlin expressed pride in being able to photograph celebrities like Elijah Wood, who appreciated the initiative's goal.
The project's scope includes various events, from film festivals to academic honors, with notable figures gaining new images that enhance their Wikipedia profiles. Frank Sun, a filmmaker also contributing to WikiPortraits, shares experiences with figures like Laetitia Dosch, who has long wanted an updated representation online.
Looking forward, WikiPortraits plans to recruit more photographers globally to capture events in diverse regions, aiming to shed light on underrepresented individuals in the media. The team aspires for high-profile coverage of events like the Met Gala and the Oscars as benchmarks for their success.
