Indonesian Fishermen Take Legal Action Against Bumble Bee Foods Over Forced Labor Allegations
Four fishermen have filed a lawsuit in California federal court against the U.S. tuna giant, alleging the company profited from abusive practices on supplier-operated fishing vessels.
In a bold move, four Indonesian fishermen have filed a federal lawsuit against Bumble Bee Foods, an established name in the canned tuna market based in San Diego, California. The fishermen allege that the company not only profited from their labor but also knowingly tolerated severe abuses inflicted by its suppliers.
The fishermen's allegations detail harrowing experiences at sea: a crew member described a scenario where they had no choice but to consume bait due to extreme hunger; another recounted physical assaults from the captain; and a third shared a chilling account of being denied medical assistance after suffering severe burns.
Muhammad Syafi’i, one of the plaintiffs, stated his desire for justice in a recent online interview from his home in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. He revealed that during his employment on one of the boats that caught tuna for Bumble Bee, he was also coerced into giving up a significant portion of his modest monthly wage. His claims include being disregarded when he sustained serious injuries that required medical attention, further illustrating the hazardous conditions faced by workers in the fishing industry.
The intense legal battle awaits Bumble Bee Foods’ response, which has declined to comment on ongoing litigation. As awareness grows around the treatments endured by those supplying seafood, this landmark lawsuit aims to challenge corporate responsibilities within the global food system and ensure dignity for workers at sea.
