Des Moines, Iowa - The Des Moines Public Schools, Iowa's largest school district, has filed a lawsuit against JG Consulting, the firm it employed to search for superintendent candidates. The district claims negligence after the recent arrest of Ian Roberts, who was taken into custody by immigration authorities.
The school board alleges that JG Consulting did not adequately vet Roberts, who was charged with possessing firearms while allegedly living in the United States unlawfully. Roberts, originally from Guyana, is accused of being in the country without work authorization, as confirmed by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The complaint emphasizes the district's aim to recover taxpayer dollars and mitigate reputational harm. Board Chair Jackie Norris stated, The firm failed its duty to properly vet candidates. Ian Roberts should have never been presented as a finalist. If we knew what we know now, he would never have been hired.\
The situation has created turmoil within the community, with students participating in protests and demanding answers regarding the leadership decision. Norris mentioned that the school board views itself as a victim of deception throughout Roberts' tenure.
Roberts, who resigned this week after his educational license was revoked, had previous claims regarding his school qualifications questioned. His resume falsely stated he earned a doctorate, a claim now disproven.
Federal prosecutors contend that Roberts had an outstanding removal order and previously filed for reconsideration of his immigration status, which was denied earlier this year. The school's contract with JG Consulting outlined that it was responsible for the vetting process, including reference checks, recruitment, and background checks.
James Guerra, the president of JG Consulting, has yet to respond publicly to the lawsuit. The controversy around Roberts continues to unfold, casting a shadow over the school district as it navigates the aftermath of this situation.
