US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) shot and killed a man near Chicago on Friday after he allegedly drove his car at a group of agents.

A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security stated that ICE had been attempting to arrest the man, who resisted and drove towards the group, dragging an agent along with his vehicle.

The agent, fearing for his life, drew his weapon and opened fire, resulting in the death of the driver, identified as Silverio Villegas-Gonzales, at a nearby hospital shortly thereafter.

Officials reported that during a vehicle stop, the suspect resisted and attempted to drive his vehicle into the arrest team, striking an officer and subsequently dragging him as he fled the scene.

The agent suffered severe injuries but is currently listed in stable condition at the hospital.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, Mr. Villegas-Gonzales had a history of reckless driving and was identified as an undocumented migrant, having entered the country at an unknown date and time.

The Franklin Park local police department confirmed they were not involved in the incident.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker expressed his concern for the public, stating, This is a developing situation and the people of Illinois deserve a full, factual accounting of what's happened today to ensure transparency and accountability. The suburb of Franklin Park, which is home to approximately 18,000 residents, has a significant Hispanic population.

This event comes amidst a reported increase in immigration enforcement activities in the Chicago area, coinciding with directives from the Trump administration.
