Actor Eric Dane announces his health battle but expresses gratitude for support.
Eric Dane, the beloved star of HBO's "Euphoria" and the medical drama "Grey's Anatomy," recently disclosed that he has been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a serious motor neuron disease. Speaking with People magazine, the 52-year-old actor shared that he feels "grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter."
Despite the diagnosis, Dane expressed his optimism and eagerness to return to the set of "Euphoria," where he portrays Cal Jacobs, the patriarch of the Jacobs family. The production for the highly anticipated third season is set to begin shortly. Prior to his role in "Euphoria," Dane gained fame as Dr. Mark Sloan on "Grey's Anatomy" from 2006 to 2012 and has appeared in several other shows and films, including "Charmed," "The Last Ship," "Marley & Me," "Valentine's Day," and "Burlesque."
He is married to actress and model Rebecca Gayheart, and the couple shares two children. Dane's announcement brings awareness to ALS, a degenerative disease characterized by the deterioration of motor neurons, which impairs muscle movement and eventually affects the ability to speak, eat, walk, and breathe independently.
Currently, there is no known cure for ALS, and prognosis typically ranges from three to five years post-diagnosis, although some individuals manage to live for many more years. As Dane navigates this challenging diagnosis, he continues to seek privacy for himself and his family as they confront this life-changing chapter.
