France Launches Nationwide Police Raids in Response to Prison Attacks

In response to a recent surge of violent attacks targeting prisons and prison staff throughout France, police conducted early morning raids across multiple cities arresting 25 individuals believed to be connected to the incidents. The French government attributes these attacks to retaliatory actions from gangs following a crackdown on drug trafficking.

Over the past month, France has witnessed a concerning rise in coordinated attacks on its prison system, culminating in early morning police raids across the country this Monday. This significant move resulted in the arrest of 25 individuals, including some inside prisons, for their suspected involvement in these serious incidents.

French Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin suggested that the attacks are linked to gangs retaliating against the government’s recent crackdown on drug trafficking. The government reported 65 attacks on prisons or their personnel since April 13, with the most alarming incidents occurring over five nights in April. Violent attacks included vehicle arson and gunfire targeted at various prison facilities, including La Farlede prison in Toulon, where assailants used a Kalashnikov assault rifle.

President Emmanuel Macron responded to the surge in violence, vowing that those responsible would be "found, tried, and punished." As investigations led by French anti-terror prosecutors continue, authorities have made significant progress, arresting suspected leaders believed to orchestrate these violent acts. Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau commended the proficiency of the investigation team, affirming their commitment to combating drug-related crimes and enhancing law enforcement capabilities.

Legislative changes are underway, as both houses of parliament are expected to vote on a new bill aimed at establishing a dedicated prosecutor's office with expanded investigative powers, further strengthening France's response to gang-related violence and drug trafficking.
