Grandmothers Go for Gold: Singapore's Ah Ma Flippa Ball Team Brings Seniors Together

The Ah Ma Flippa Ball team showcases how Singapore encourages its senior citizens to remain active and engaged through sports.

In Singapore, a group of grandmothers in their 60s, 70s, and 80s are leading the charge in a modified version of water polo, known as flippa ball, highlighting the nation’s commitment to enhancing the quality of life for its aging population.

In a bustling swimming complex in Singapore, the sounds of splashing and laughter fill the air as participants engage in a game of flippa ball. This scene encapsulates the spirit of the Ah Ma Flippa Ball team, which translates to "grandmother" in several Chinese dialects. This dynamic group of women, primarily aged between 60 and 80, defies stereotypes about aging by fiercely competing in a modified version of water polo designed for younger players.

Since its inception in 2016, the Ah Ma Flippa Ball team has demonstrated more than just athleticism; it represents a broader societal shift in Singapore, where life expectancy now reaches 84 years. With nearly 20% of the population aged 65 and older, the government has taken proactive measures to ensure that senior citizens live fulfilling, active lives. From increasing the retirement age to implementing the re-employment age, the policies reflect an understanding and respect for the older generation's contributions.

In addition to structural changes, the government also encourages community engagement through initiatives like the "Silver Generation Ambassadors," who make house visits to older residents. These ambassadors promote activities such as gaming, learning new skills like robotics, and, of course, the exhilarating sport of flippa ball. The presence of older residents in various sports like cheerleading and e-sports speaks volumes about changing perceptions of aging in Singapore.

Coaching the Ah Ma team is Ting Kum Luen, who recalls his initial hesitance when asked to coach seniors as he typically worked with children. However, witnessing the camaraderie and joy among the players has been inspirational. The competitions are as fierce as they are fun, as players tussle for the ball with energy and vigor that defies their ages, showcasing that staying active boosts both physical and mental well-being.

As Singapore continues to evolve, initiatives like the Ah Ma Flippa Ball team not only promote health and fitness among seniors but also foster a sense of community and belonging, proving that age is merely a number when it comes to enjoying the vigor of life.
