Two individuals arrested for allegedly extorting money from Tottenham captain over false paternity claims.
Two individuals were arrested for attempting to blackmail Son Heung-min, the esteemed captain of Tottenham Hotspur and a prominent figure in South Korean sports. The woman, in her 20s, allegedly claimed to be pregnant with Son's child and submitted an ultrasound image as evidence, which led her to demand hush money amounting to $214,000. This incident has drawn considerable media attention given Son's status in South Korea, where he is celebrated as one of the world's best Asian soccer players.
The man, in his 40s, was also taken into custody after reportedly threatening to expose the purported scandal unless Son paid him $50,000. The Seoul Central District Court deemed both suspects flight risks and issued arrest warrants accordingly. Son's agency publicly denounced the claims, stressing that he is the victim and expressed regret over the distress this situation has caused his supporters.
While the woman, identified only by the surname Yang, refrained from addressing reporters about the pregnancy allegations during her court appearance, she denied any involvement in colluding with her male counterpart, Yong, in the extortion attempt. The police have indicated that both parties were known to each other, though details surrounding their relationship remain unclear.
Son Heung-min, who currently holds the record for the most goals scored by a Korean in a European league season, recently returned to play in the Premier League after recovering from an injury. He is also set to feature in the Europa League final against Manchester United.
