Engineers Unearth Centuries-Old Message in a Bottle at Scottish Lighthouse

A remarkable find at Corsewall Lighthouse reveals a handwritten note from 1892, giving insight into past lighthouse keepers.

In a fascinating discovery at the historic Corsewall Lighthouse nestled in Kirkcolm, Scotland, mechanical engineers stumbled upon a message in a bottle dating back to 1892. This unexpected find emerged during refurbishments aimed at preserving the lighthouse’s integrity after 200 years of service to mariners navigating the treacherous coastline.

While working on the lighthouse, Ross Russell, one of the engineers involved in the project, chanced upon a glass bottle nestled within a wall’s cavity. Intrigued, he and his colleagues cautiously removed it and gathered around as the lighthouse keeper was summoned to unveil the bottle’s contents. Upon removing the rusted wire and old cork, a handwritten note was revealed, displaying elegant cursive script.

As the group examined the document, they discovered it was dated September 4, 1892, heightening their anticipation about its potential significance. Barry Miller, the current lighthouse keeper, recounted the moment, noting, “I couldn’t keep my hands still, and I read the note out to the other guys.” Speculation swirled around what the note might contain—was it an expression of love, a complaint about lighthouse duties, or perhaps a treasure map? Miller humorously remarked that they had all agreed to keep it a secret if it turned out to be the latter.

This wondrous message serves as a bridge to the past, showcasing the lives and voices of those who once dedicated themselves to the lighthouse and the sea. The event not only highlights the importance of historical preservation but also connects modern-day engineers with the rich maritime history of Scotland. As the mystery of the message unfolds, it invites further exploration into the tales of the lighthouse and its keepers through time.
