Search Intensifies for Missing American Hiker in the Spanish Pyrenees
Cole Henderson, 27, has been missing since July 9 after embarking on a hike near Mount Perdido in Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park, prompting a major search effort.
Spanish search and rescue teams are actively engaged in the search for 27-year-old American hiker Cole Henderson, who disappeared on July 9 after embarking on a trek in the picturesque Pyrenees. The last communication from Henderson came shortly after 2 p.m., when he informed friends via text that he was putting his phone in airplane mode, indicating he was preparing for the hike.
Henderson, currently living in Amsterdam, had been vacationing in Spain and had previously participated in the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona. He planned to hike Mount Perdido, the third-highest peak in the region, known for its breathtaking scenery and challenging terrain, characterized by steep ascents that require careful navigation.
Friends became concerned after Henderson failed to board his scheduled flight home to the Netherlands last weekend, prompting them to report him missing. Following their report, the Spanish Guardia Civil initiated a search in Huesca province, deploying specialized search teams and helicopters. Henderson's vehicle was found parked in Torla, the gateway to Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park, where many hikers begin their excursions in the summer season.
Inside the vehicle, rescuers discovered a receipt for camping fuel, suggesting Henderson might have been prepared for an extended stay in the wild. The park, renowned for its stunning meadows and dramatic canyon landscapes, poses risks, particularly for those tackling its more challenging trails.
Known among peers as an enthusiastic outdoor enthusiast and diligent trip planner, Henderson’s social media is filled with images of his various adventures, including hiking and skiing. Friends describe him as sociable and organized, often rallying groups for outdoor experiences. His friend, Max Senoff, shared that Henderson is well-liked and admired for his ability to bring people together.
As search efforts continue, those close to Henderson are rallying support to keep his case in the public eye, hoping for a safe resolution to this incident.
