Cologne's Major Evacuation: 20,500 Residents Displaced for WWII Bomb Disposal

A significant evacuation in Cologne has taken place as experts prepare to safely defuse three unexploded WWII bombs, impacting thousands of residents and city operations.

In an unprecedented move, Cologne is evacuating over 20,500 individuals from the city center to ensure the safe removal of three large WWII bombs found in a shipyard. The operation affects numerous homes, businesses, and local transportation, as authorities stress the importance of safety for the densely populated area.

Authorities in the German city of Cologne have initiated a large-scale evacuation, affecting approximately 20,500 residents in the city center to facilitate the defusing of three unexploded World War II bombs. The massive operation is believed to be the largest of its kind since the war's end, as the bombs, discovered in a Deutz neighborhood shipyard, present a significant safety risk.

The bombs date back to the air raids of World War II and were uncovered on Monday. In an official statement, the city outlined a designated evacuation zone extending 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) from the site, urging residents to depart immediately. Local police have been actively cordoning off areas to ensure compliance, warning that any refusal to leave could result in police intervention or substantial fines.

Critical infrastructure, including a major hospital, schools, hotels, and businesses around Old Town and Deutz, are part of the evacuation measures. Officials are going door-to-door to alert residents, resulting in eerily quiet streets where bustling shops and cafes typically thrive. Cultural venues have also been impacted, with the Philharmonic Hall and numerous museums ceasing operations for the duration.

Transport has been severely affected as roads within the vicinity are closed, and train services have faced significant disruptions. The Messe/Deutz train station is among those shut down, stranding many commuters. To assist displaced residents, the authorities have established two drop-in centers for those lacking alternate accommodation.

Despite the significant disturbances, Cologne Bonn Airport reports that flights will continue; however, accessing the airport may pose challenges due to transportation restrictions. Amid the chaos, some couples faced the disappointment of having their weddings relocated due to the evacuation, highlighting the widespread impact of this emergency.

With bomb disposal expected on Wednesday, the evacuation is critical for the safety of all residents in the populous area. The city has urged individuals to remain calm, carry essential identification and medications, and secure their pets during this unprecedented event.
