Renewed Drone Attacks in Ukraine as Easter Truce Concludes
Ukrainian forces report renewed Russian drone strikes across multiple regions shortly after the expiration of a short-lived truce.
Ukraine's military has reported a series of Russian drone attacks across multiple regions, just hours after a 30-hour "Easter truce" declared by Moscow came to an end. The Ukrainian air force issued raid alerts for cities including Kyiv, Kherson, Dnipropetrovsk, Cherkasy, Mykolaiv, and Zaporizhzhia following the end of the temporary ceasefire.
In Mykolaiv, Mayor Oleksandr Senkevych reported that explosions were heard, although casualty figures have not yet been confirmed. Russia has yet to comment on the alleged strikes, but both sides have accused each other of violating the ceasefire agreement, which expired at midnight local time on Sunday (21:00 GMT).
In the early hours of Monday, local authorities in several Ukrainian cities, including the capital Kyiv, advised residents to seek shelter immediately due to the threat of drone attacks. The BBC has not independently verified the claims from either Kyiv or Moscow regarding the hostilities.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump, who has been advocating for an end to the conflict, expressed hope that "Russia and Ukraine will make a deal this week," but did not elaborate further. Since the full-scale invasion launched by Russia on February 24, 2022, the conflict has resulted in the loss of hundreds of thousands of lives, predominantly among military personnel, and has left Russia in control of approximately 20% of Ukrainian territory, including Crimea, which was annexed by Moscow in 2014.
There is now increased international scrutiny as the ongoing hostilities disrupt peace efforts, while Moscow recently outlined a list of conditions in response to a comprehensive ceasefire proposal previously agreed upon by the US and Ukraine.
