A recent military operation in north-west Nigeria has resulted in the death of notorious bandit leader Gwaska Dankarami and around 100 of his followers. Dankarami, described as a pivotal figure within a criminal network linked to Islamic State, was killed in a raid on his hideout in Munumu Forest, according to local authorities. This operation follows a recent surge in violence, including a deadly attack in which bandits kidnapped 43 villagers, leading to four fatalities in Katsina State.

The latest joint operation yielded significant results, with the commissioner for internal security, Nasir Mua'zu, heralding the success as a critical win against the rampant banditry that has plagued the region. "This successful mission has significantly disrupted the criminal networks that have long terrorised communities across Faskari, Kankara, Bakori, Malumfashi, and Kafur," he stated. The operation not only targeted Dankarami but also dismantled several other criminal hideouts, while security forces recovered and destroyed two machine guns and improvised shotguns.
This is not the first report of Dankarami's demise; a similar claim emerged from the Nigerian Airforce in 2022. Nonetheless, the government's resolve to combat banditry remains strong amidst ongoing efforts to stabilize the affected regions. In a related operation, six other bandits were killed, including their commander, alongside the recovery of seven motorcycles.
Katsina State, which has seen an upsurge in violence from bandits and kidnappers, continues to be a focal point for security forces as they work relentlessly to safeguard its residents and monitor all forest areas. State governor Malam Dikko Umaru Radda has assured the public of the government’s commitment to eradicate criminal activities and restore safety in the region.
