China’s Strong Warning Against U.S. Tariff Measures
Beijing responds firmly to U.S. trade pressures amid complicated diplomatic landscape
China's top diplomat, Wang Yi, addressed the media in Beijing on March 7, 2025, issuing a stern warning regarding U.S. trade practices. Wang stated that China would not shy away from retaliating against the United States should it choose to escalate the current trade war with additional tariffs on Chinese goods. His remarks followed President Trump's recent decision to suspend tariffs on items from Mexico and Canada while leaving those on Chinese products intact.
“If you choose to cooperate, you will achieve mutual benefit and win-win results. But if you apply pressure blindly, China will definitely and resolutely counter,” he asserted during a news conference corresponding with China's annual legislative session. Wang criticized the U.S. for its handling of the fentanyl crisis, urging American authorities to introspect instead of blaming other countries, particularly China.
He pointed to a “two-faced” strategy by the Trump administration, highlighting the contradiction of seeking cooperation with Chinese leadership while simultaneously imposing trade barriers. “No country can expect to suppress and contain China while also fostering good relations with it,” Wang remarked, implying this approach only undermines bilateral relations and mutual trust.
His statements came amid China's struggle to attract foreign investments following economic slowdowns, aftermaths from the COVID-19 pandemic, and tighter national security laws. As Wang outlines his vision, he hopes to restore confidence in China's economic prospects while mediating tensions in international trade relations.
