Boxing champion Manny Pacquiao announces a comeback bout against WBC champion Mario Barrios.
Manny Pacquiao is making headlines once again as he announces his return to boxing at 46 years old, nearly four years after his last bout. The Filipino boxing icon is set to clash with WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios on July 19 in Las Vegas. With this fight, Pacquiao aspires to become the oldest boxer to hold the welterweight title.
"I'm back," Pacquiao proclaimed on his social media platform, hinting at his desire to create another remarkable chapter in his celebrated career. He holds the record for being the oldest welterweight champion, having defeated Keith Thurman in 2019 at the age of 40 to seize the WBA (Super) world title.
Despite concerns regarding his age, the World Boxing Council (WBC) reinstated Pacquiao's ranking last week, placing him at number five. WBC president Mauricio Suliman defended the decision, emphasizing that Pacquiao has obtained medical clearance and a license to fight in Nevada, in addition to being a revered champion within their organization.
Prior to this announcement, Pacquiao's last fight was in August 2021 where he lost to Yordenis Ugas by decision. Throughout his career, Pacquiao has won the welterweight championship four times, boasting an impressive record of 62 fights, with eight losses and two draws. Since retiring, he has also ventured into politics in the Philippines, though he recently fell short in his pursuit of a senate seat.
