The hostages, part of a larger group abducted during the Hamas-led assault on October 7, 2023, included approximately 250 individuals, ranging from Israelis to foreign citizens, gravely impacting many families. Reports indicate that out of the original group, around 1,200 individuals lost their lives and several were later released in exchanges for Palestinian prisoners. Notably, over three dozen of the kidnapped hostages have tragically been confirmed dead.

Despite the outcry, Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, defended the cabinet’s decision, asserting that it was a necessary step to ensure the safety of Israeli citizens and contribute to the potential release of hostages.
