Lalo Schifrin, Iconic Composer of Mission: Impossible Theme, Passes Away at 93

Lalo Schifrin, the renowned Argentine composer best known for creating the iconic theme for the "Mission: Impossible" series, has died at the age of 93. Ryan Schifrin, his son, shared the news of his father’s passing due to complications from pneumonia in a heartfelt announcement via CBS, a partner of BBC News.

With a career that spanned more than six decades, Schifrin was celebrated for his eclectic, percussive, and jazzy compositions, amassing over 100 soundtracks for both film and television. He received six Oscar nominations throughout his career and secured four Grammy Awards, including three for the memorable "Mission: Impossible" theme first introduced in the 1966 television series, which he later adapted for the blockbuster films starring Tom Cruise.

In a statement, Schifrin's family expressed their gratitude for the outpouring of support they received, noting that he "passed peacefully" surrounded by loved ones. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences honored Schifrin's creative genius, acknowledging how his compositions have a unique ability to build tension and excite audiences.

Schifrin, also a talented pianist and conductor, consistently earned nominations at prestigious awards for his compelling scores in films such as "Cool Hand Luke," "The Amityville Horror," "Dirty Harry," and "The Sting II." His contribution to film music was celebrated when he received an honorary life achievement Oscar in 2018, presented by the legendary Clint Eastwood. Upon receiving the award, Schifrin reflected on his career, sharing that composing for films had gifted him "a lifetime of joy and creativity," and he aptly declared it a "Mission: Accomplished."

Later in his life, Schifrin recalled his early musical education in Buenos Aires, where his roots began in classical piano. After relocating to Paris at a young age, he honed his skills in jazz alongside esteemed musicians like Dizzy Gillespie and Ella Fitzgerald. His migration to America allowed him to blend various genres, solidifying his beacon status in Hollywood.

The unforgettable "Mission: Impossible" theme, characterized by its exceptional 5/4 time signature, was designed to evoke "a little humour and lightness." This approach transformed the theme into an indelible element of a film franchise that has grossed over $540 million globally with its latest release, "Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning."
