**US Sanctions Sudan Over Chemical Weapons Use Amid Ongoing Civil War**

The US government has announced new sanctions targeting Sudan due to the use of chemical weapons in its civil conflict.

The United States State Department stated that it has discovered evidence of chemical weapon use by Sudan's military, leading to restrictions on American exports and financial borrowing. The sanctions, effective June 6, come amidst a brutal civil war against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) that has claimed over 150,000 lives since it erupted two years ago. The US did not specify the types of chemical weapons used, but previous reports indicated chlorine gas was deployed, causing severe health risks. The US reiterated its commitment to enforce the Chemical Weapons Convention, which Sudan is a signatory of, and has called on the country to halt its chemical weapons program. Additional sanctions on Sudanese leaders were previously imposed after accusations of war crimes. While these measures aim to hold accountable those responsible for the conflict's atrocities, some analysts believe they will have little impact due to prior sanctions.

In a separate development, tensions have surfaced regarding the United Arab Emirates' involvement in Sudan, especially following allegations that it supplied arms to the RSF, which the UAE denies. Amid rising political dynamics in the region, these developments complicate Sudan's already precarious situation as millions continue to suffer from displacement and famine.

As the civil war rages on, citizens and observers alike are left grappling with the profound implications of chemical warfare and international responses to the ongoing crisis in Sudan.
