Israeli military raids in Jenin lead to the arrest of Ali al-Samoudi, drawing condemnation from journalist organizations.
In a recent raid conducted by Israeli forces in the West Bank city of Jenin, prominent Palestinian journalist Ali al-Samoudi was arrested, prompting widespread condemnation from the Palestinian Journalists' Syndicate. Al-Samoudi, 58, is well-respected for his reporting and has collaborated extensively with various Western media outlets. His arrest occurred during a surprise raid on his son’s residence on Tuesday morning.
According to his son, Mohammed, al-Samoudi underwent half an hour of interrogation at an undisclosed location before being transferred to an Israeli hospital due to deteriorating health conditions. The Israeli military has accused al-Samoudi of associations with the Palestinian Islamic Jihad terrorist organization and alleged involvement in financial transfers to it; however, they have not provided any evidence to substantiate these claims. His family has firmly refuted the allegation, asserting that in his longstanding career, he has never faced such accusations.
The whereabouts of al-Samoudi in the hospital remain undisclosed, with authorities failing to share even the name of the facility. He is scheduled to appear before a military court next Tuesday. The Israeli military announced that a broader operation had resulted in the arrest of 24 individuals linked to funding terrorist organizations, including three from Jenin.
Al-Samoudi's history includes his involvement in a tragic incident in May 2022, during which he was shot while covering an operation alongside Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Aqla, who was killed by Israeli forces. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) reports a concerning trend, detailing that since the outbreak of the Gaza conflict in October 2023, Israeli forces have detained at least 79 journalists from the West Bank and Gaza, while Palestinian authorities have apprehended an additional five. Tragically, 176 journalists have lost their lives across Gaza, the West Bank, Israel, and Lebanon amid the ongoing violence, raising urgent calls for accountability and protection of media personnel in the region.
