The Mariinsky Theater confirms the tragic loss of one of ballet's brightest talents without disclosing specifics surrounding his death.
Vladimir Shklyarov, a distinguished ballet dancer and principal at the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg, tragically passed away on Saturday evening at the age of 39. The theater's statement regarding his death lacked details, leaving many questions unanswered. According to RIA Novosti, a federal agency has initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Shklyarov’s death, with initial reports suggesting it may have been an accident.
Over his remarkable 20-year career, Shklyarov earned global recognition, gracing the stages of esteemed venues such as the Metropolitan Opera in New York and London’s Royal Opera House. He hailed from Leningrad and graduated from the illustrious Vaganova Ballet Academy in 2003, a school known for nurturing ballet legends like Mikhail Baryshnikov.
Having begun his journey with the Mariinsky soon after graduation, Shklyarov starred in both contemporary and classic ballets such as "Swan Lake," “Don Quixote,” and “Giselle." His artistry earned him numerous accolades, including the prestigious Léonide Massine International Prize in 2008, though he often regarded the title of honored artist of Russia, awarded in 2020, as his most cherished honor.
Details on his surviving family members remain scarce. However, it is known that he was married in 2012 to fellow dancer Maria Shirinkina, who also performed alongside him at the Mariinsky Theater.
In a poignant review of their work during the company's 2016 US tour, a critic highlighted a memorable performance where Shklyarov’s elegance juxtaposed Shirinkina’s ethereal presence, reflecting their deep artistic connection. A former ballerina, Irina Bartnovskaya, reported that Mr. Shklyarov had been at home managing pain in preparation for foot surgery prior to the tragic incident. According to Bartnovskaya, he suffered a fatal fall while stepping out onto a narrow balcony to smoke. While her account remains unverified, similar reports have circulated in Russian media, including statements from the Mariinsky Theater regarding his condition.
