**Woman Sentenced to 14 Years for Graffiti Amid Brazil's Political Turmoil**

A Brazilian woman receives a lengthy prison sentence for writing on a statue during unrest following elections.

The controversial ruling reflects broader tensions surrounding political dissent and legal accountability in Brazil.

A Brazilian woman, Debora Rodrigues, has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for writing a message in lipstick on a statue during political unrest that erupted in the capital earlier this year. The 29-year-old was arrested alongside hundreds of supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro, who were involved in violent protests aimed at government buildings following Bolsonaro's defeat in the 2022 elections.

Rodrigues faced accusations of being part of a criminal organization seeking to undermine democracy. In court, Justice Cristiano Zanin emphasized that her conviction stemmed from various offenses, not simply the act of graffiti. The sentence has sparked considerable debate, with many arguing that it is disproportionately severe. Supporters of Bolsonaro contend that the Supreme Court's decision reflects an overreach of power and bias against his followers.

The incident, in which Rodrigues scrawled the phrase "You lost, idiot" on a statue of Justice, quickly gained notoriety, being dubbed the "lipstick coup." In her defense, Rodrigues expressed remorse for her actions, claiming she never intended to participate in violence and was swept up in the chaotic atmosphere of the protests. Her lawyers maintain that her actions were impulsive and did not include entering any government buildings.

Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes challenged this narrative, asserting that Rodrigues knowingly aligned herself with those advocating for an overthrow of the government. Evidence presented during the trial suggested she may have attempted to hide her communications regarding the events.

Rodrigues' case has since drawn attention as a symbol among Bolsonaro supporters, who argue it exemplifies political persecution. In February, her story resonated on social media, leading to broader discussions about the legal consequences of dissent in Brazil. As political tensions continue, Bolsonaro himself faces significant legal scrutiny over the unrest, potentially leading to decades in prison if convicted.
