More Patriot Systems En Route to Ukraine Amid Escalating Conflict
The U.S. is dispatching additional air defense systems to bolster Ukraine's defenses against Russian aggression.
Ukraine's ongoing battle with Russia is set to receive a significant boost with the arrival of more American air-defense systems. Reports indicate that a Patriot system previously stationed in Israel is being dispatched to Ukraine, with plans underway for either Germany or Greece to contribute another system, as per sources with knowledge of the matter.
While the discussions remain sensitive, several current and former U.S. officials have revealed these developments on the condition of anonymity. They did not comment on President Trump's position regarding the transfer and did not clarify whether this decision was made during his administration or under President Biden.
According to James Hewitt, a spokesman for the White House’s National Security Council, the administration has not disclosed specific details surrounding the deployment or functionality of defense systems. He did highlight President Trump’s desire for an end to the conflict and the cessation of violence.
The U.S. Defense Department acknowledged that it continues to assist Ukraine by providing various equipment from previously authorized packages, which include weaponry taken from existing stockpiles as well as new acquirables.
Ukraine recently experienced increased attacks from Russia, particularly with a deadly missile strike on Kyiv on April 24, which has heightened the urgency for defense support.
A year prior, the Ukrainian government struggled to secure Patriot systems amidst requests for seven. Currently, Ukraine possesses eight systems, though only six are operational, with the remaining two undergoing refurbishment. Adding the system from Israel and another potential contribution from Germany or Greece would bring Ukraine's total to ten, offering enhanced defense primarily for the capital city, Kyiv.
