Ceasefire Negotiations Renewed: Hope for a 50-Day Truce
Hamas and Israel engage in talks for a potential ceasefire agreement amid escalating violence in Gaza.
The Palestinian militant organization Hamas has announced its willingness to consider a new ceasefire proposal for Gaza that could result in a 50-day truce in exchange for the release of five more hostages. Khalil al-Hayyam, a high-ranking Hamas official located outside Gaza, affirmed the group’s acceptance of the draft deal put forth by mediators from Egypt and Qatar.
The Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office has acknowledged receiving this proposal and has submitted a counter-offer, reportedly in full cooperation with the United States, as confirmed by the AFP news agency. If the new ceasefire agreement is finalized, it may coincide with the onset of the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr, providing a timely opportunity for peace.
The renewed discussions emerge as Israeli military operations continue to target Gaza, with a focused ground operation in Rafah. The ongoing conflict followed the breakdown of an earlier ceasefire agreement from January, which had seen 33 hostages released. Currently, Hamas is believed to still hold around 59 hostages, although concerns about their safety persist.
Hamas had initially insisted on adhering to the original terms of the previous agreement, which included the possibility of negotiating for the total release of remaining hostages in exchange for a complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza and an end to hostilities. However, those negotiations did not materialize.
In contrast, Israel and the US advocated for an extension of the original ceasefire phase, which expired a month ago, despite the lack of assurances for a lasting peace. Subsequently, as tensions escalated, Israeli forces resumed their military campaign on March 18th, leading to more than 900 reported casualties in Gaza, according to figures from the health ministry controlled by Hamas.
Netanyahu's office has yet to disclose details regarding their counter-offer while continuing military actions. Domestic protests have erupted, criticizing the Israeli government for jeopardizing the lives of remaining hostages by terminating the earlier ceasefire. A recent video released by Hamas depicts one of the captives, Elkana Bohbot, in distress, pleading for his freedom.
The renewed conflict was ignited following a Hamas attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, resulting in approximately 1,200 fatalities and the taking of 251 hostages into Gaza. In retaliation, Israel initiated a comprehensive military operation, leading to claims of over 50,000 Palestinian deaths by the Hamas-run health ministry.
