Woman Wins Civil Case Against Conor McGregor for Assault
A jury finds the MMA fighter liable, awarding damages stemming from a 2018 incident.
A jury verdict in the High Court in Dublin concluded that Conor McGregor, the renowned Irish mixed martial arts fighter, assaulted Nikita Hand in a hotel in December 2018, awarding her over €248,000 (£206,000) in damages. The jury's decision, which followed deliberations that began Thursday afternoon, confirmed Ms. Hand's allegations against McGregor but dismissed similar claims against another individual, James Lawrence, whom she accused of sexual assault.
Following the verdict, Ms. Hand expressed her gratitude for the support she received, stating she felt "overwhelmed and touched." She emphasized the importance of standing up for oneself in the face of trauma, especially for her daughter Freya, and urged other victims of sexual assault to find their voice and seek justice.
Lawyers representing both McGregor and Lawrence refuted Ms. Hand’s allegations, claiming that they engaged in consensual interactions with her nearly six years ago. Before the jury reached its decision, Mr. Justice Alex Owens reminded them that the burden of proof rested on Ms. Hand and that the verdict needed to reflect a balance of probabilities.
