This week, a wildfire erupted on Crete's southeastern coast, prompting the evacuation of over 1,500 individuals, predominantly tourists. The fire, fueled by extreme heat and dry conditions, spread quickly through the rugged terrain around Ierapetra, creating a distressing scene as firefighters struggled to contain the flames. Owner of a local hotel, Fanouris Vatsinas, described the tense moment when firefighters urged him to evacuate as the fire neared his establishment.
