"Matthew Radalj details his traumatic experience in Beijing's notorious detention center and the psychological manipulation endured."
Australian Matthew Radalj, after spending five harrowing years in a Beijing detention center, has chosen to reveal the appalling realities of life inside one of China's notorious prisons. His testimony sheds light on the severe physical punishments, constant sleep deprivation, and unhealthy living conditions he and other international inmates endured.
Radalj, now residing outside of China, recounted the traumatic circumstances of his arrest on January 2nd, 2020, following a dispute at an electronics shop that led to his wrongful conviction for robbery. He described how he was beaten for two consecutive days at a police station, deprived of food and water, and ultimately coerced into signing a false confession, believing it might lead to a lighter sentence amidst a legal system known for an almost complete conviction rate.
During his imprisonment at the Beijing No. 2 prison, he faced a grueling existence, where inmates shared cramped, unsanitary cells with lights perpetually switched on. Radalj specifically highlighted a dehumanizing "transition phase," where conditions were intentionally harsh, including months without the ability to shower or clean themselves. Toilet access was restricted, exposing prisoners to filthy environments.
In addition to these conditions, Radalj described psychological manipulation through a "good behaviour points system" that ostensibly allowed inmates to earn sentence reductions. However, he revealed that this system was often weaponized against inmates by guards who would punish them just shy of their attainment goals, deliberately creating a sense of hopelessness.
Radalj also recollected on the struggles over food, as meals consisted mostly of inadequately prepared cabbage and bread, leading to malnutrition among inmates. Those who worked in the prison kitchen sometimes benefited from better food, creating rivalry among prisoners. During his time, Radalj became embroiled in a violent altercation between two groups competing for kitchen privileges, resulting in an extended period in solitary confinement.
The harrowing experience deeply affected Radalj's mental health, particularly during solitary, where he was left with minimal light and almost no human contact. Despite this torment, he managed to keep a secret journal on scraps of material, which he later smuggled out, wishing to share the untold stories of others still imprisoned.
After his dramatic release on October 5, 2024, Radalj returned to Australia and married his long-time girlfriend, vowing not to forget the plight of his fellow inmates. He has since used his voice to advocate for those left behind, reaching out to their families to facilitate communication during their ongoing incarceration.
While he expresses gratitude for his freedom, Radalj acknowledges the weight of responsibility he carries for those still enduring the bleak realities of the Chinese prison system, stating, "With freedom comes a great sense of gratitude, but I also have a great sense of responsibility to the people I left behind in prison."
