Australia's Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated that the country will expel Iranian ambassador Ahmad Sadeghi after alleging that Iran's government directed antisemitic attacks against Jewish communities in both Sydney and Melbourne last year. Albanese described these incidents, which occurred last year but resulted in no injuries, as extraordinary and dangerous acts of aggression orchestrated by a foreign nation. In an alarming disclosure, Mike Burgess, head of the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO), confirmed the agency's intelligence pointing towards Iran's likelihood of involvement in such attacks and looking towards potential future threats against Australian Jewish targets.

On the government’s order, Sadeghi and three other Iranian officials must leave Australia within a week. As a further response, the Albanese administration plans to designate Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization. Ensuring diplomatic ties remain intact, Foreign Minister Penny Wong indicated while operations at the Australian embassy in Tehran would be suspended for staff safety. Wong also urged Australian citizens to refrain from travel to Iran and to evacuate if possible. This marks the first expulsion of an ambassador by Australia since World War II.
