Tragedy Strikes as Ferry Sinks Off Bali, Leaving Casualties and Missing Persons
At least five confirmed dead and dozens more unaccounted for in a devastating ferry sinking near Bali.
At 11:20 PM local time on Wednesday, the ill-fated ferry was making its way from Banyuwangi on Java Island to Bali when it encountered trouble. Reports from the National Search and Rescue Agency reveal that before sinking, the vessel faced engine malfunction and bad weather conditions. Efforts to locate those still unaccounted for are ongoing, with 31 individuals having been rescued thus far.
Survivors have recounted harrowing tales of the tragic incident. Imron, a resident of Banyuwangi, described the moments before the ferry capsized, recalling how it tilted three times before water flooded the cabin. He managed to escape through a gap before being rescued. Bejo Santoso, another survivor, jumped off the ferry and reached for a life jacket just moments before it rolled over completely.
President Prabowo Subianto, currently on an official trip to Saudi Arabia, has called for an urgent emergency response. The ferry's route, which is known to be one of Indonesia's busiest, regularly ferries locals between Java and Bali. Photos shared by local media depict ambulances on standby and anxious relatives awaiting news of their loved ones.
Maritime accidents are unfortunately not a rarity in Indonesia, an archipelago of approximately 17,000 islands, where safety regulations are often poorly enforced. Past incidents have included capsizings and fatalities, signifying an ongoing concern for passenger safety.
