Children Bring Joy to Pope Francis' Hospital Stay with Cheerful Messages
Youngsters gather outside Gemelli Hospital to send well-wishes for the pontiff's recovery.
On a sunny Sunday at Policlinico A. Gemelli in Rome, dozens of children brightened the atmosphere with vivid yellow and white balloons, the Vatican’s colors, while chanting “Papa Francesco” and expressing their hopes for peace, "Viva la Pace!". Their gathering coincided with Pope Francis' over four-week hospitalization, wherein the pontiff is being treated for pneumonia.
Holding handmade signs that conveyed messages of love and encouragement, many young ones wished for the pope's speedy recovery. Among them was a spirited boy, accompanied by fellow “castorini,” a term for Italy's youngest scouts, proudly displaying a sign reading, “Ciao Papa Cesco, I love you a lot.” Though the pope did not make an appearance, he acknowledged their heartfelt efforts during his traditional Sunday blessing, which, for the fifth consecutive week, was not delivered live. He conveyed his gratitude, saying, “Thank you, dearest children! The pope loves you and is always waiting to meet you.”
Rev. Enzo Fortunato, president of the pontifical committee for World Children’s Day, emphasized the profound impact children have, describing their joyful presence as a “symbolic medicine” for Pope Francis. He assured that the heartfelt posters and letters made by the children would be saved and awaiting the pope's return to the Vatican guesthouse, Casa Santa Marta, and expressed confidence that the pope would respond when he is well enough.
