Biden Slams Trump’s 'Modern-Day Appeasement' in Ukraine Policy

In a revealing BBC interview, former President Joe Biden criticizes Trump's approach to Ukraine, labeling it as surrender to Russian aggression.

Reflecting on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Joe Biden condemned the Trump administration's pressure on Kyiv for territorial concessions to Russia. He warned that such actions mirror 'modern-day appeasement,' reminiscent of pre-WWII policies, and underscored the implications on US-European relations and global democracy.

In a recent interview with the BBC, Joe Biden criticized former President Donald Trump's approach to the ongoing war in Ukraine, referring to it as "modern-day appeasement" towards Russian President Vladimir Putin. This marks Biden's first comprehensive discussion since leaving the White House, conducted while Allied nations commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE Day.

During the exclusive interview, Biden articulated his concerns about the pressures that Trump's administration allegedly placed on Ukraine to concede territory for a peace agreement. He emphasized that giving in to Putin's demands would merely embolden him and proffer a dangerous precedent. "Anybody that thinks he’s going to stop if some territory is conceded... is just foolish," Biden stated, warning that such moves could destabilize not only Ukraine but also transatlantic relationships.

Biden, who faced scrutiny regarding his own record on Ukraine and his recent decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race late in the campaign, asserted, "I don’t think it would have mattered" if he had resigned sooner, alluding to the urgency of the political climate leading to his exit. He described the decision to step down as challenging yet necessary amid rising concerns regarding his administration's effectiveness.

As Trump pushes for an informal acknowledgment of Russian sovereignty over Crimea, Biden argued that such recognition is detrimental. He recalled the historical failures of appeasement, drawing parallels to former British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain’s attempts to placate Hitler in the late 1930s. Biden warned that if NATO allies begin to doubt America's commitment, it may lead to a significant shift in global diplomacy.

In the face of bipartisan criticism of Trump's approach, Biden pointed out the necessity of long-term strategic alliances, underscoring that strength lies in harmony with allied nations. "I don’t understand how they fail to see that there’s strength in alliances... It saves us money overall," he declared.

Moreover, Biden highlighted the importance of maintaining military support for Ukraine, promising that under his leadership, the US would continue to back the war-torn nation decisively. The interview revealed the deep rift between Biden's and Trump's foreign policies, especially concerning the conflict with Russia and the overall stability of international relations.

As tensions regarding the war persist, Biden stands firm in advocating for robust US support while denouncing retreating measures that echo policies of appeasement—a critical position as the global community confronts the aggressions of authoritarian regimes.
