Three police officers were killed and two others critically injured in a shooting in the US state of Pennsylvania, while following-up on a domestic-related investigation, authorities have said.
Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Colonel Christopher Paris confirmed that the gunman was fatally shot by the police.
The incident occurred shortly after 14:00 local time (18:00 GMT). Images from the scene depicted a police officer being airlifted by helicopter.
Due to the incident, a nearby school district in Spring Grove, a small town with about 2,500 residents, was briefly placed on lockdown, although the school later indicated it was not directly affected.
Officials reported that there was no ongoing threat to the public. The shooting unfolded in a rural area of York County, specifically North Codorus Township, about 100 miles (160km) west of Philadelphia. Police indicated officers had been on site for an investigation that began the day prior.
While details remain scarce due to the ongoing investigation, Governor Josh Shapiro visited the area later that day to meet with the families of the fallen officers. He expressed sorrow for the three officers lost, stating, We grieve for the loss of life of three precious souls who served this county, this commonwealth, and this country. He further emphasized the need for change in society regarding violence.
In tribute to the fallen officers, Governor Shapiro ordered that all Pennsylvania state flags be flown at half-mast across public buildings and grounds throughout the commonwealth.
Additionally, FBI Director Kash Patel assured that agents were on-site providing support to local and state authorities, stating, Our prayers are with the officers, their families, and the entire York County community.
