Albufeira, a favored holiday spot in Portugal's Algarve region, plans to impose fines of up to €1,500 for tourists caught wearing swimwear away from the beach. Albufeira's New Code of Conduct: Fines for Beachwear in Public Spaces
The popular tourist destination in Portugal introduces strict regulations prohibiting swimwear outside the beach to maintain its family-friendly image.
In an effort to transform its image and promote a family-friendly atmosphere, the city of Albufeira in Portugal has unveiled a contentious plan that could soon see tourists facing hefty fines for donning swimwear in public areas. The changes are part of an updated code of conduct that explicitly prohibits individuals from being in a state of partial or complete nudity outside designated beach zones.
Tourists enjoying Albufeira's renowned beaches will need to keep their swimwear confined to sand and surf, or risk penalties of up to €1,500 (£1,250). This decision comes as part of a broader initiative to enhance the locale's appeal, particularly to families, amid rising concerns over inappropriate behavior from visitors.
The city's move aligns Albufeira with other European destinations, such as Barcelona and Dubrovnik, that have enacted similar restrictions. The code's tightening follows unflattering incidents, including one last year where eight British tourists were filmed dancing naked in a bar on Rua da Oura, Albufeira's lively main street. The incident quickly gained notoriety online, prompting local officials to address the "excessive" behavior exhibited by some visitors.
Mayor José Carlos Rolo convened an emergency meeting with security forces and local businesses to devise strategies for curtailing such antics. The proposed regulations emphasize the need to preserve Albufeira's identity as a safe, multicultural, and family-friendly destination.
In addition to outlawing swimwear outside the beach, the new rules will also prohibit sexual acts in public spaces, extending the restrictions to terraces visible from public areas. Violating businesses may face substantial fines if found enabling disruptive behavior. While the proposal is now available for public consultation, it is anticipated to be implemented in time for the upcoming summer tourist season.
