Gujarat Bridge Collapse: Survivors Describe Terrifying Moments of Sudden Disaster
Accounts from survivors shed light on the chaos following a bridge collapse in India, which has claimed at least 15 lives and left many missing.
Survivors of a devastating bridge collapse in Gujarat, India, shared chilling firsthand accounts on Wednesday, mistaking the catastrophic event for an explosion or an earthquake. The accident resulted in the tragic loss of at least 15 lives, with several others still unaccounted for as rescue operations persist.
Eyewitness Anwarbhai, who was driving on the bridge with fellow passengers, recalled, “There was a huge explosion-like sound, and part of the bridge collapsed behind us. Our van started rolling backward, and we jumped out immediately.” Dramatic footage captured the moment, showcasing vehicles plunging into the Mahisagar River as the structure gave way.
Among those affected was Sonalben Padhiyar, who survived the disaster but lost six family members when their vehicle fell into the river. In a distressing interview, she described the chaotic moments as her car submerged, highlighting that she screamed for help for an extended period before rescuers arrived.
Another survivor, Dilipsinh Padhiyar, was on his motorcycle when the bridge buckled beneath him, sending him into the waters. He managed to cling to a metal rod until local fishermen came to his aid; however, he sustained injuries from the fall.
Witnesses reported that the collapse shook the ground, with locals rushing to help rescue efforts as soon as they learned of the incident. Jairaj Singh, a nearby resident who quickly arrived on the scene, detailed how he and others used ropes to pull vehicles from the river.
The tragedy has revived discussions regarding the maintenance of public infrastructure, with many locals voicing longstanding concerns over the bridge's deteriorating condition. One resident noted, “It would shake whenever heavy vehicles went over it,” while another community leader condemned the state of disrepair.
In response to these claims, Gujarat government spokesperson Rushikesh Patel refuted allegations of neglect, affirming regular inspections and a recently approved plan for constructing a new bridge to replace the existing structure.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has extended condolences to the victims' families and announced a compensation package for those affected. The bridge collapse is part of an alarming trend of deadly incidents linked to aging infrastructure across India, underscored by a similar catastrophic event in 2022 that resulted in the deaths of 135 people.
