Incredible Flood Devastation Hits Northern Queensland, Recovery Efforts Underway
Queensland's premier describes the flooding's impact as "incredible," as communities face extensive damage.
The recent floods in northern Queensland have left communities grappling with "incredible" devastation, according to Premier David Crisafulli. Although weather conditions have improved faster than expected, there are still concerns for those returning home on Tuesday. Many residents evacuated amid forecasts of extensive flooding, with fears that hundreds of homes and businesses have been affected.
Speaking to ABC, Premier Crisafulli emphasized the resilience of the people, stating, "It's a disaster that's going to test the resolve of people." Since Saturday, some areas in the region have experienced nearly 2 meters (6.5 feet) of rain, resulting in ongoing flood warnings and power outages. However, skies have cleared over Townsville where the anticipated flooding levels did not reach previously predicted heights, leading Crisafulli to conclude that some neighborhoods may have "dodged a bullet."
In contrast, communities further north, particularly Ingham and Cardwell, are facing communication challenges and disrupted roadways, making damage assessments difficult. Crisafulli shared his shock at seeing water where it has never been before during his lifetime in Ingham.
Currently, over 8,000 properties are without power, and critical infrastructure, including a highway, has partially collapsed, complicating rescue and recovery efforts. The premier acknowledged that the road to recovery will be lengthy, urging patience as the scope of the damage becomes clearer.
