Russia Sentences General Ivan Popov to Prison for Criticizing Army Leadership

A Russian military court has sentenced a former general to five years in prison after he publicly criticized his superiors.

Former Maj. Gen. Ivan Popov, who gained fame for his leadership during the Ukraine conflict, has been sentenced to five years in a low-security penal colony following his outspoken criticisms of the Russian military's senior command. This unusual ruling has sparked significant backlash among military supporters.

In a striking development that highlights the ongoing tensions within the Russian military, the court found Maj. Gen. Ivan Popov guilty on charges related to corruption, a verdict his supporters claim is politically motivated. Popov, a well-respected figure who played a vital role in defending against a significant Ukrainian offensive in Zaporizhzhia, was dismissed from his post in July 2023 amidst a broader crackdown on military figures after the failed mutiny led by Yevgeny Prigozhin.

Following his dismissal, Popov made headlines by issuing a heartfelt recording to his troops, accusing the top brass of “treacherously” undermining the army at a crucial time. "We were struck in the rear by our senior commander," he stated, a veiled reference to Gen. Valery Gerasimov, the chief of Russia's armed forces. This candor gained him a following among military elites and pro-war commentators, turning him into a symbol of dissent within the ranks.

After Popov's audio message went public, he faced backlash from military leadership, culminating in his arrest for allegedly misappropriating materials intended for the army. This charge echoed accusations made by Prigozhin against Gerasimov, illustrating the internal strife that characterizes the current military environment.

On Thursday, a military court penalized Popov with a five-year prison term and a substantial fine, actions characterized by many as an effort to silence dissent. His lawyers announced intentions to appeal the ruling. While Popov’s supporters have rallied around him, referring to him as a valiant commander who defended Russia against Ukrainian advances, this incident raises questions about the state of military freedom and governance in Russia.

Prominent military commentator Yuri Podoliaka expressed outrage over the verdict, stating that “in a state with the rule of law, this could not happen.” As political turmoil continues to brew beneath the surface of the Russian military, General Popov’s case epitomizes the struggles faced by those who dare to challenge authority in today's Russia.
