Israel Vows to Halt Flotilla Aiming to Deliver Aid to Gaza
Tensions rise as Israel threatens military action against a pro-Palestinian yacht carrying humanitarian aid and activists, including Greta Thunberg, on its way to Gaza.
Israel has escalated tensions in the region by warning that it will take military action to intercept a vessel attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza. The yacht, known as Madleen, is currently 160 nautical miles from the Gaza Strip and is carrying a crew of pro-Palestinian activists including climate activist Greta Thunberg. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that any attempt to breach the naval blockade would be met with necessary measures, urging the crew to turn back.
Katz emphasized that the blockade aims to prevent arms transfers to Hamas and that its enforcement is crucial for Israel’s security. The minister's comments were expressed through a social media platform, where he addressed the crew directly, labeling Thunberg and others aboard as "anti-Semitic" and "Hamas propaganda spokespeople." He reaffirmed Israel's stance: "Israel will act against any attempts to break the blockade or assist terrorist organizations – at sea, in the air, and on land."
The Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC) is organizing the mission, asserting that the Madleen is an unarmed civilian vessel carrying essential supplies like rice and baby formula, along with human rights advocates from various countries including Brazil, France, and Sweden. Despite Katz's threats, FFC's press officer, Hay Sha Wiya, reiterated their commitment to proceeding, insisting that Israel has no right to obstruct their humanitarian efforts.
Israeli media indicate that the navy might intercept the vessel before it reaches Gaza, and officials have suggested they will bring the occupants to Israel and deport them shortly. The situation recalls past incidents, notably the 2010 Mavi Marmara incident, where armed confrontations led to fatalities during an aid mission to Gaza.
As the situation develops, the FFC remains undeterred, determined to draw international attention to their cause while facing possible Israeli military enforcement against their humanitarian mission.
