A devastating road collision near Oaxaca leaves many injured and families mourning.
On Wednesday morning, Samuel Aguilar Pala, a local official, confirmed that the three-vehicle incident occurred on the highway connecting Cuacnopalan and Oaxaca in Puebla state. Initially, 18 victims succumbed to their injuries at the scene, while three more were pronounced dead in hospitals later. Several other individuals sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical care, Aguilar announced on social media platform X.
The crash involved a tanker truck, a bus, and a van, according to local reports. Mexican newspaper La Jornada detailed the sequence of events, stating that a cement truck attempted to overtake the van, leading to the horrific crash. As the truck swerved into the opposite lane, it collided with a bus and subsequently crashed head-on into the transport van, causing the truck to tumble into a ravine below, where it erupted in flames. Footage shared by local journalists depicted a significant cloud of dark smoke billowing from the ravine and a large section of road railing destroyed.
This incident follows a troubling trend of severe highway accidents in Mexico. Notably, a similar tragedy occurred in February when numerous lives were lost in a bus crash in southern Mexico, marking a call for heightened safety measures on the nation's roads.
