A devastating bus accident near Uyuni leaves dozens dead and injured as authorities investigate.
In the early hours of Saturday, tragedy struck approximately 5 kilometers from the southwestern city of Uyuni when the two buses collided. Police spokesperson Wilson Flores reported that one driver is in intensive care while the other is stable.
Images from the scene depict a severely damaged bus, its exterior mangled and luggage strewn across the nearby roadway.
The collision occurred on the route linking Uyuni to Colchani, reportedly due to a "lane invasion," as per local media sources.
One of the affected buses was en route to Oruro, coinciding with Oruro Carnival, one of the largest festivities in Latin America.
By 10:00 local time (14:00 GMT), recovery operations concluded, and injured individuals were transported to hospitals in Oruro and Potosí.
The identities of the deceased have not yet been released, and the medical status of the injured remains uncertain.
As the investigation continues, authorities are awaiting the results of alcohol tests conducted on the drivers. Traffic incidents of this nature are unfortunately common in Bolivia, with over 30 fatalities recorded in a similar February crash when a bus fell nearly 800 meters into a ravine between Potosí and Oruro.
Earlier this year, another incident in the region claimed the lives of 19 passengers. Government data indicates that the nation, home to roughly 12 million people, sees an average of 1,400 road-related fatalities annually.
