North Korea Vows Unwavering Support for Russia's Efforts in Ukraine
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un expresses complete backing for Moscow amid ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un extended his "unconditional support" for Russia in its war against Ukraine during a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Wonsan, according to state media reports. Kim stated that North Korea stands behind "all measures" taken by Russia to address the "root causes" of the crisis. With claims from Western officials about Pyongyang sending approximately 11,000 troops to assist Moscow, the partnership has grown increasingly visible, especially since Russia's invasion of Ukraine commenced in February 2022.
The atmosphere of the meeting was described by North Korean state media KCNA as filled with "warm comradely trust." Kim voiced confidence in the Russian military's eventual victory in preserving the nation's dignity and essential interests. A video shared on Telegram by Russia's foreign ministry illustrated the rapport between Kim and Lavrov, showcasing them shaking hands and sharing a hug during their meeting.
Moreover, Lavrov's visit included discussions with North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui, where he acknowledged and thanked the "heroic" North Korean forces assisting Russia. This renewed military alliance occurs as U.S. President Donald Trump has restarted military support to Ukraine, including a deal to provide Patriot air defense systems, in response to heightened attacks from Russia.
In April, Pyongyang first confirmed sending troops to support Russia, which was independently corroborated by Ukraine and Western intelligence sources. Last June, Kim had solidified military ties with President Vladimir Putin by signing an agreement indicating mutual support in case of either country's facing of foreign aggression.
Beyond troop deployments, North Korea has committed to dispatching thousands of laborers to aid in the reconstruction of Russia’s war-affected Kursk region, as stated by Moscow's security chief last month.
